Self-esteem refers to our self-respect — the confidence each of us has in our own worth or abilities. It influences our beliefs and emotions and how we get along with family members, friends, and people in the community.
A balanced self-esteem is important. We should have a positive view of ourselves while remaining empathetic towards others.
Our childhood experiences or distressing events, past and present, can often hinder us from viewing our lives in a positive light.
Symptoms of low self-esteem include shame, depression, anxiety, and focussing on our personal failures and shortcomings. Low self-esteem can also cause us to make poor choices and engage in destructive behaviour and relationships.
